Joseph Réginald Topize, known to the world as KAYA, was born on 10 August 1960 in Mauritius. His music fused sega — the traditional rhythmic soul of the island — with the consciousness of reggae, creating a genre he called seggae. He was not just a musician; he was a voice for the poor, the marginalised and the silenced.
His career spanned a decade of recordings across multiple labels and productions, leaving behind a catalogue that remains deeply loved and deeply contested. KAYA died on 21 February 1999 while in police custody, triggering mass protests across Mauritius. He was 38 years old.
His death marked a turning point in Mauritian history. The days that followed were among the most turbulent the country had known since independence. His legacy has never stopped growing.

"His music was the sound of a people speaking to themselves — honest, rooted, and impossible to ignore."
